Statement of Doctor who was at the Nazım Hikmet Cultural Centre in Ankara on 03.06.2013.
“Last night I was at the Nazım Hikmet Cultural Centre. You know it has been converted into a temporary medical room. We were there to tend to the wounded. I would like to underline the fact that we are not working under the name of any organization or any political party. We are just trying to be worthy of the Hippocratic Oath we have taken.
I would like to tell you about the events so you have an idea. The police, the anti-riot forces in particular, laid siege onto the centre we had converted into a medical room despite knowing that it was a place providing health services, they broke down the windows and the doors, and they fired gas bombs inside over and over again, and when it became impossible for us to breathe, they kicked and beat up with there truncheons every single person who managed to get outside.
I took my share of this. Following a few kicks, I was hit on my head with a truncheon. But we are not afraid. Do not forget, even war has its rules. Attacking hospitals and medical rooms is prohibited no matter what. The Turkish police has overstepped that line. I was truncheoned yesterday. But I am not afraid, I will be there again tonight.”
